Junior Achievement of Memphis and the Mid-South
Last year, during Financial Planning Week Oct. 4-10, 2010, Rebecca Lin, advisor at the Germantown Branch, organized a joint effort with the Junior Achievement of the Memphis and the Mid-South and six other financial advisor volunteers of the Financial Planning Association of the Mid-South to teach eleventh grade classes about basic budgeting and personal finance skills at Sheffield High School.
Students learned about prudent money management strategies, the different incomes and expenses categories in the cash flow statement, and making wise purchase decisions. Each class were divided into groups and played the game "Balance, Break-even, Broke," where students were faced with daily financial and purchase decisions with their available income, tax status, and savings goals. At the end of the game, those students who had a positive net cash flow at the end of the month were rewarded with prizes.
Since 1919, Junior Achievement has helped young people recognize how their talents and abilities can create better lives for themselves and those around them. JA's sequential and integrated kindergarten through grade 12 programs help young people use information, apply basic skills, think critically, and solve complex problems.
Rebecca served as the Pro Bono Officer of FPA of the Mid-South Board of Directors in 2010 and is currently serving as the Director of Programs and Education for 2011.
